Man bags 30-day jail term for burgling shop, stealing N1m

Isaac Ayoke, a 26-year-old resident of Ajah, will be spending the next 30 days in prison for stealing his employer’s N1 million, an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos ruled on Tuesday.

Magistrate F.F George pronounced the verdict after the suspect pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing and burglary.

The court sentenced Ayoke to 30 days imprisonment on each of the counts but ordered that the sentence should run concurrently, though without an option of fine.

“You are hereby sentenced to 30 days imprisonment with hard labour. The sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar acts,” George said.

Ayoke had, on August 14, admitted that he committed the offences and was remanded in prison.

On Tuesday, when the case was called up for evidence and sentence, he admitted guilt and the magistrate consequently convicted and sentenced him.

Sgt. Godwin Awase, the prosecutor, told the court that Ayoke committed the offences on July 7 at Mushin in Lagos State.

He said the convict burgled one of the offices of GHL Glass Tech Nigeria Ltd. and stole N1million.

“The accused, after closing hours, broke the ceiling to gain entrance into the office where the money was kept.He bolted away with the money and refused to report for work the following day,” Awase said.

He said that CCTV camera installed within the company recorded the burglary and theft. The management was able to identify the convict after the CCTV camera was played.

“They went in search of him and caught him in his brother’s place where the money was recovered from him, he was handed over to the police,” the prosecutor said.
