Sanwo-Olu Unveils 3 New Blue Line Trains to Ease Lagos Traffic

To ease Lagos’ notorious traffic woes, Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu unveiled three brand-new, four‑car train sets on Sunday at National Theatre Station—doubling the Blue Line’s passenger capacity. Eager commuters can now look forward to shorter wait times and a ten‑minute headway target.

“Each set includes four cars, and with this addition, we are doubling our current passenger capacity on the Blue Line,” the governor touted on his official social media handles.

This new deployment comes amid a Blue Line ridership of approximately 2 million passengers in its first year, averaging around 5,200 daily journeys. Previously running 54 daily trips, frequency was increased to 72 in August 2024, shortening travel time from Marina to Mile 2 from 30 minutes to 18. The three incoming sets promise to ramp up service frequency even further—especially with Phase II running toward Okokomaiko, expected by 2027.

“Today, I unveiled three new train sets… doubling our current passenger capacity,” Sanwo‑Olu wrote, adding this will benefit thousands daily by “reducing wait times, shortening travel durations, and improving the overall reliability of the rail system.”

Looking ahead, Lagos is set to receive additional trains before year-end for the Red Line, which will boast double the capacity of the Blue Line units, further fortifying Lagos’ urban transport backbone.

“Before the end of the year, we’ll receive new trains for the Red Line… Construction on Phase 2 of the Blue Line is also progressing steadily,” the governor affirmed. “We’re building infrastructure and a better future for urban mobility in Lagos. And we’re just getting started.”
