LGA Chairman calls for effective planning as 6 die in flood in Edo

Six lives have been lost to flood which swept through communities in Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State, the Chairman has confirmed.

The LG Chairman, Victor Emuankhagbon told officials of the National Emergency Management Agency on Saturday that one of the bodies was yet to be recovered from the flooded area.

Emuankhagbon, NAN reports, added that no fewer than 42 communities, 8,000 houses and 35,150 persons were affected by the flood.

He urged the emergency operatives to respond quicker to victims of flood and be more effective in averting natural disasters.

He also urged authorities in the country to focus more on long-term plans rather than short-term solutions.

“We are reacting to the crisis in the same old ways by adopting quick fix, temporary approach, thereafter, we all go home and relax until it happens again.

“We do this over and over again. The truth is that the time has come for us to start planning ahead because if we failed to plan, we are planning to fail,” Emuankhagbon said.

Flood has sacked many residents from their homes and destroyed properties across several states following an overflow of two rivers due to torrential downpour.
