PHOTOS: 3 Shi’ite members killed, 4 soldiers injured in Abuja clash
Three Shi’ite members were killed in the face-off with soldiers at Kugbo/Karu bridge checkpoint in Abuja on Monday, the military has confirmed.
The protesting members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria were said to have forced their way to the military checkpoint after overrunning police operatives.
The protesters, armed with catapults and canisters, fired stones and other items at the soldiers. The flow of traffic was disrupted as a result, with many motorists suffering damages to their windscreens.
Three of the protesters were shot dead in the process, the military said, while also confirming that four of its operatives were injured.
The face-off bore similar circumstances with the incident on Saturday, in which three Shi’ite members were also killed.
The Army said normalcy has since been restored in the area and urged residents to go about their businesses peacefully.
Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, leader of the Muslim group, will appear in court November 7.
