TUC embarks on strike over minimum wage September 27

The Trade Union Congress has said it will go on strike on Thursday, September 27, as initially planned. The union had, on September 12, threatened FG to speed up the process of a new minimum wage or force it into embarking on the strike.

Labour Minister, Dr. Chris Ngige had told the committee to adjourn indefinitely to give room for further consultations with the government.

TUC said in a statement through its Secretary-General, Musa-Lawal Ozigi, that it had resolved to go ahead with the strike as FG hasn’t yielded to the demands.

“Strike is hereby declared to commence from early hours of Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018,” Ozigi said.

He noted that as a result of the TUC’s decision to embark on strike, mobilisation of members would commence immediately.

The Secretary-General added that members of the public, workers, and Civil Society Organisations should stockpile their houses with all necessary provisions and food items.

Ozigi, however, called on state councils to form joint state strike implementation committee that would comprise the TUC, NLC and other stakeholders in the state to ensure effectiveness.

Nigeria’s minimum wage was last reviewed in 2010 when former President Goodluck Jonathan increased the pay from N7,500 to N18,000.
