Trailer accident causes major gridlock in Jibowu
Tragedy was averted early this morning following a trailer accident on Jibowu Bridge connecting Ojuelegba area of Lagos. It caused a major traffic jam that took several hours to clear by emergency officials.
Most of the traffic gridlock experienced at intersections of Yaba, Jibowu axis are man induced as traffic holdups have become almost a regular feature on the axis.
Oulisted below are some of the major problems identified with traffic and accidents in Jibowu axis:
Traffic regulations:
The Jibowu intersection has 16 turning points. It is a major junction linking three primary distributors in the metropolis. The intersecting roads are Herbert Macaulay, Agege motor road and Ikorodu. Controlling traffic on this road is difficult; the road is a major challenge for ‘newbies’ who may ply the road at dawn or dusk.
Gross indiscipline:
Luxury bus operators:
Jibowu is purely a commercial area which serves mostly as a terminal for some luxury bus operators. Similar to truck drivers, indiscipline on their part also creates a jam along that area. As a hub of commercial buses, a major bus park has become a necessity to ease the flow of traffic. Lagos State Government recently issued a seven-day ultimatum to inter-state transport operators to vacate Ikorodu Road.
Lack of traffic signs and sewers
Jibowu due to its intersections is not well lit, most of the traffic signs are not working. In the same vein, the inadequate drainages and sewers create floods whenever it rains.
It is an unsafe area for pedestrians
Pedestrians stand a major risk of being killed whenever these accidents happen. The truck that crashed this morning could have fallen on several pedestrians walking underneath.
