Passengers stranded as Aviation unions shut down MMA2

Many passengers were left stranded Wednesday morning at the Murtala Muhammed Airport following a protest by members of an aviation union.

The members, NAN reports, were protesting the alleged dismissal of some workers by Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL).

NAN further reports that members of the union defied the early morning rain and an alleged court order preventing them from the protest

The General Secretary of Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Mr Frances Akinjole, told NAN that the unions were forced to carry out their protest and disruption due to the refusal of the BASL management to yield to their demands.

”This issue started since May when these workers were laid off for indicating interest to belong to unions, We met the management asking them to reinstate these workers and recognise their rights to join unions but they refused,” he said.

Akinjole also denied any knowledge of a court order restraining them from carrying out the protest today.

BASL authorities, however, claimed they had gotten an order from the Federal High Court in Lagos restraining the unions from disrupting the activities of the airport.
