6 die as buses carrying students collide in Ebonyi

The FRSC has confirmed the death of at least six persons in an accident in Ebonyi on Friday.

The agency said the accident, which occurred at the Ezzamgbo end of the Enugu-Abakaliki road, involved two buses. The buses carrying 28 passengers in total collided on top speed.

FRSC Commander in Ebonyi, Stella Uchegbu, identified one of the buses as a Mitsubishi L300 and the other bus, coming from Taraba, ‘People’s Choice’.

“28 persons, comprising 21 male and seven female passengers, were in the two buses, but four male and two female occupants died on the spot,” Stella said.

An eyewitness said sympathisers carried out rescue operations and discovered that many of the passengers were students. He also urged the government to look into recurring accidents on that particular expressway.

“We learnt that most of the passengers were students of a private university in one of the South-South states, said to be returning from a trip.

“We appeal to the relevant authorities to take measures to check the incessant accidents on this part of the highway,” the eyewitness said.

The FRSC Commandant added that nine injured passengers had been taken for treatments to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, while the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the Morgue.
