Economic historian, Dr. Samuel Olusegun Osoba Dies At 92

Dr. Samuel Olusegun Osoba, a respected economic historian and member of Nigeria’s 1977 Constituent Assembly, has passed away at the age of 92.

Osoba reportedly died peacefully at his residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, in the early hours of Thursday, May 14, 2026.

His death was announced in a statement released by the Yusufu Bala Usman Institute and signed by its director, Norma Perchonock.

The institute described Osoba as a committed scholar whose academic work focused on exposing the effects of capitalism and neocolonialism on Nigeria’s development.

According to the statement, his teaching and research were dedicated to educating Nigerians on economic structures that encouraged exploitation and underdevelopment.

The statement noted that Osoba made significant contributions to the field of economic history through books, academic papers, newspaper articles, and public commentary aimed at a broad audience.

One of his most notable achievements was co-authoring The Minority Report and Draft Constitution for the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1976 alongside his longtime associate, Yusufu Bala Usman. The document was described as influential in shaping national conversations on constitutional reform and Nigeria’s political future.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
