5 dead, 16 hospitalised as poor water system causes cholera outbreak in Gombe
A fresh cholera outbreak has killed about five persons in Gombe.
At least 16 others were rushed to the primary health care in Kembu, Balanga LGA, according to Dr Nuhu Bile, the Acting Epidemiologist in the state.
Bile told NAN on Thursday that the outbreak happened in the month of October.
He 70 per cent of those affected were treated and discharged, while the five people that died couldn’t get medical attention on time. He added that the World Health Organization (WHO) were also assisting with the treatment of 16 other victims.
Bile, who linked the outbreak to the damaged ‘five hand’ pump that made residents seek other means of getting water, said a total of 13 lives have been lost to cholera attack in the state while 500 persons have been treated in the past five months.
He listed three local governments affected by the outbreak as Funakaye Gombe, Yamaltu-Deba and Balanga.
