Supreme Court upholds Adeleke's emergence as Osun governor

The Supreme Court in Abuja, on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, upheld the victory of Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winner of the Osun state governorship election.

The Supreme Court judgement comes 45 days after the judgement of the Court of Appeal in Abuja which nullified the sacking of Adeleke by the elections petitions tribunal.

Adeleke is an uncle to music star Davido.

Neusroom reported on January 27, 2023, that the Osun state governorship election petitions tribunal annulled the result of the July 16, 2022, poll in the state and declared Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner. The judgement was, however, nullified by the Appellate Court.

After six months of legal battle that started at the Election Petitions Tribunal, the Supreme Court in a unanimous judgement has now put an end to all litigations on the election.

In the judgment, the Apex Court said that Oyetola failed to prove its case of over-voting and improper accreditation. The court said that the Electoral Act signed by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022 did not abolish the voter register and that in case of alleged over-voting, there is need for the voter register and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) to prove it.
