Dangote unveils $2.5bn energy project in Namibia

Aliko Dangote, president and chairman of Dangote Group, has inaugurated a tank farm in Namibia as part of a proposed $2.5 billion investment in energy infrastructure.

The project was officially launched in Walvis Bay on Wednesday, with Dangote joined by Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

At the launch, Dangote disclosed that the facility would cover about 70 hectares at Farm 58, located approximately 10 kilometres east of Walvis Bay.

“The project will consist of approximately 600 million litres, about 4 million barrels of storage capacity, comprising 360 million litres of diesel and 240 million litres of petrol, together with truck loading, dispensing, and associated infrastructure for efficient onwards distribution,” Dangote said.

He added that the development would feature a regional pipeline running from Walvis Bay towards Otjiwarongo, with additional links to Rundu, Ghanzi and Francistown in Botswana.

According to Dangote, the proposed distribution network is designed to extend its reach to Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and the southern Democratic Republic of Congo.

He noted that the pipeline’s final route and length would depend on engineering assessments, route surveys and the necessary regulatory approvals.

Dangote put the total investment required for the project at approximately $2.5 billion.

Nathalia Goagoses, governor of Namibia’s Erongo region, expressed support for the development, saying it would improve the region’s role as a centre for trade, investment and economic cooperation.

“We recognise the significance of this investment and look forward to a mutually beneficial partnership,” she said.

”Sustainable development can only be achieved through strong partnerships, collaboration and a shared vision.”

Meanwhile, Nandi-Ndaitwah described the proposed $2.5 billion investment as a major development that would support Africa’s industrial growth, improve energy security across the region and strengthen economic ties among Southern African countries.
