Former Speaker of Lagos House of Assembly arraigned over murder of police officer
A Chief Magistrates Court in Ebute Meta heard the murder case involving former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Jokotola Pelumi, on Tuesday.
Pelumi has been accused of aiding a suspect identified as Adekunle Dabiri, over the murder of a Deputy Superintendent of Police.
The 59-year-old lawyer was arrested with some suspected cultists.
NAN reports that Pelumi was the speaker during Bola Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos, but he was later impeached in December 2005.
Police prosecutor, J.I. Eboseremen, told the court that Pelumi committed the offence for allowing the suspected murderer of DSP Akingboju Akindele into his home in Agbowa, near Ikorodu area of Lagos, on October 27.
Eboseremen also said that the former speaker had gone against Section 231 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State Nigeria 2015.
Pelumi, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges of “receiving a murder suspect and also aiding his escape,” levelled against him.
He was granted bail of N1million by the Chief Magistrate A.O. Adedayo with two diligent sureties, one of whom must be from the Lagos House of Assembly.
Adedayo adjourned the case till November 26 for hearing.
