Sanwo-Olu endorses Hamzat for Lagos governor
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred candidate for the state’s 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement was announced on Monday following a closed-door meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest the governorship. The meeting was attended by members of the State Executive Council, key party leaders, and the Governor’s Advisory Council.
Among those present were Musiliu Obanikoro, a former Minister of State for Defence, and Ganiyu Solomon.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the endorsement as a unanimous decision by stakeholders, expressing confidence in Hamzat’s ability to lead the state.
According to the governor, his deputy has demonstrated competence and readiness for higher responsibility, citing their close working relationship over the past seven years.
He praised Hamzat’s integrity, loyalty, and commitment, noting that these qualities have defined his performance in office.
Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the role of Bola Tinubu in shaping both his and Hamzat’s political trajectories, describing the president as instrumental in their emergence and collaboration.
He added that the decision followed extensive consultations with party leaders and government officials, characterising the process as a “family meeting” that produced a consensus.
The endorsement signals an early consolidation within the All Progressives Congress in Lagos as political activities gradually build up ahead of the 2027 general elections.
