Army ordered to pay assault victim N1million for violation of rights
The lady who was beaten and assaulted by an Army officer in January 2017 has been awarded a sum of N1million in damages.
Ebere Ohakwe had been brutalised by one Olamilekan Suleiman while traveling to Onitsha, after he accused her of being rude by gossiping about him with her friend during a stop and search.
A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has found the Army division guilty of violating Ohakwe’s human rights.
The court awarded N1 million in favour of Ohakwe against the Army and ordered the Division to tender an unreserved apology to her.
Justice Adamu Turaki Mohammed noted that Ohakwe proved her case beyond doubt, adding that she was entitled to reliefs she sought. He also restrained the Army from carrying out further unlawful actions against her.
