Women march to end incest in Edo, demand fathers to stop impregnating their daughters

Women in Edo state have embarked on a march to protest against the rising rate of men who go about impregnating their biological daughters in the state.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Magdalene Ohenhen, had raised alarm on the prevalent cases of men defiling their daughters.

The protest which was organized by Brave Heart Initiative for Youth and Women (BHI) was staged at the NUJ Press Center in Benin on Wednesday.

Mrs. Ohenhen joined the protest to demand justice for 17-year-old Gift Alonge, who was sexually abused and impregnated by her father.

Gift Alonge’s father, Jacob Alonge got her pregnant in 2017 and forced her to undergo crude abortion. After that incident, he proceeded to impregnate her again in 2018.

When Jacob was charged to court for his crimes, Gift Alonge was denied justice as she was involved in an accident that claimed her life, alongside her Uncle, Mr. Ukere Adagbogu, and two other members of BHI.

The leader of BHI, Lady Grace Osakue said that the issue was no longer tolerable as it was now becoming a normal thing for fathers to impregnate their biological daughters in Edo state.

“It’s a very sad situation. Edo State is becoming something else, and the earlier we stop it, the better for us,“ Lady Osakue said.

“We are begging Edo men to stop sleeping with their daughters, it is an abomination.”
