Sexual Assault: 4 ways parents make it easier for children to be abused

The coordinator of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, has revealed that some parents make it easier for children to be defiled.

There are many issues that may contribute to child abuse, but some factors increase the risk to children and make them more vulnerable to abuse. They can be found in the background of parents, in the environmental situation and in attributes of the children themselves.

The media was recently awash of a peculiar case; the story of a 16-year-old girl who died after she was raped and impregnated by her family doctor at the Federal Medical Center, Bida, Niger State.

The following reasons contribute to how parents make it easier for children to be defiled:

Leaving children with neighbours or strangers:

It is important to state that some people actually make it easier for children to be defiled. The idea of leaving children with neigbours or total strangers is condemnable.

Parents are not supposed to leave their precious jewels with any kind of person.

Giving abusers too much access to children:

Some abusers don’t just pounce on children, they groom them. They gain their trust, get their confidence and it can start with something so basic but you will be amazed what that can do to a child over a period of time.

Grooming and instilling fear in the child:

There is grave danger in victim-blaming and subjecting victims of abuse to fear of stigmatisation. These are the things perpetrators take advantage of and use to groom children.

A non-biological adult living in the house:

Living with an unrelated adult, especially an unrelated man, substantially increases the risk that a child will be sexually abused.

Parents should always ensure they engage their children in private conversations, as well as protect the interests of such children from the evils of the society.
