Senate reconvenes Tuesday to deliberate on Onnoghen’s removal by Buhari

There will be a showdown at the National Assembly on Tuesday as the Senate will hold an emergency sitting over the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen by President Buhari.

Lawmakers had earlier announced that plenary was suspended until February 19 – after the presidential and National Assembly elections would have been held.

Reports say top lawmakers will meet on Sunday (today) to discuss the agenda for the sitting.

There are indications that the Senate plans to come down hard on President Muhammadu Buhari, who has been criticized for “threatening Nigeria’s democracy” with his action(s).

But APC lawmakers at the chamber have said they will resist any attempt to initiate impeachment process against the President.

Senator Ali Ndume is quoted as saying: “As members of the APC in the National Assembly, we will put the nation’s interest above any parochial or sectional consideration in dealing with the issue.

“However, if anybody wants to start another trouble in the Senate over the issue, we are ready. We have the number; we have the strength because we constitute the majority.

“It’s just that the Senate leadership wants to play to the gallery, otherwise, I don’t see the same leadership that accused the judiciary of meddling in its affairs now moving against the President for fighting corruption in that arm of government.”

Buhari announced Onnoghen’s suspension on Friday and immediately appointed Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as new CJN.
