Rita, the longtime sweetheart of Majek Fashek who dreamt of forever with him until his life took a detour

Rita Fashek was the muse and wife of late reggae musician and guitarist, Majek Fashek ‘The Rainmaker’. Rita had been in the life of Majek through most of it, ever since they met and fell in love during a holiday internship in Benin city till their divorce in 2015.

She is credited as the inspiration to Majek Fashek’s special track ‘Without You’ in his I&I Experience album.

Reminiscing on the early days before the fame, and thereafter, Rita shared the story of how it all began:

“Majek and I met at a holiday job camp,” she said.

“We were both hired as interns and something in both of us stirred as we worked together. Soon after we met, we fell in love in the great ancient Bini kingdom; that was before he became famous. We were so much in love.”

She gushed that Majek’s heart was a pot of platinum and that he was a very kind and loving person; a great husband and lover who cared very much for her and the children. In her words, “Majek was the best husband any woman could ever dream of.”

However, many years into their marriage, things began to go downhill when Rita found out that Majek was becoming drawn to alcohol and drugs, and several efforts to help him never worked. Rita started taking care of him and the family until his actions and absence put a strain that made him leave his family in the US and returned to Nigeria.

Rita explained in a statement that was made available to the media in 2015 how she helped and waited for more than 15 years for him to turn a new leaf. But, when that did not happen, she became heartbroken and divorced him.

“I don’t regret marrying Majek. No hard feelings. He was always there for us. I thought this journey with him would last forever, but I am tired of being lonely, alone and abandoned,” she said.

They had four children together who are living with their mother in Brooklyn, New York.

Despite their divorce, Rita never stopped looking out for Majek Fashek. In the years leading to his death after their divorce, she had agreed to return to Nigeria to help him get into rehab. However, his health kept deteriorating until he died in his sleep on June 1, 2020.

His manager, Omenka Uzoma who announced the sad news on Majek’s Instagram handle said that Majek pleads that everyone remembers him by the good things he did and not the bad.
