Police warns against buying of phones from strangers

The police has warned the public to desist from buying phones from strangers who have no shops so as to avoid buying stolen items.

SP Oni Waheed, the Divisional Crime Officer of Ilaro Police Command sounded this warning in his interaction with the press in Ota, Ogun State on Thursday (today).

It’s a common occurrence to find sellers hawking smartphones in places like Computer Village in Ikeja and other parts of the country. It’s been revealed that while few of these phones are genuine, majority of them are either fake or stolen.

The implication of buying a stolen phone is that the unsuspecting new owner may be held liable for crimes they did not commit if the item is traced back to their possession.

SP. Waheed disclosed that hoodlums who are in the habit of robbing people of their phones, laptops, money and other valuables usually sell them to unwary buyers on the pretext of being broke and having to sell ‘their’ phones.

“We have seen many victims of such a problem and there is no evidence to prove their innocence,” he admits.

To be on the safe side of the law, Waheed advices buyers to always buy their phones from a reliable outlet to avoid falling victim.
