Police Saves, Actress, Mercy Johnson’s Husband, Okojie, From Kidnappers

The kidnap of federal lawmaker representing the Esan North-East/Esan South-East Federal Constituency in Edo State, Henry Okojie, has been thwarted by men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in the state.

The incident was confirmed by the lawmaker’s media aide, Michael Ihaza, in a statement released on Friday.

Gunmen spotting a Lexus GX 470, with Rivers State vehicle registration number – PHC 253 FF, hit the home of Okojie, husband to Nollywood Actress, Mercy Johnson, on Friday.

The assailants, beleived to be political thugs, aimed to assassinate the lawmaker.

According to the statement, the assassination attempt was “unsuccessful owing to the intervention of security personnel attached to the lawmaker.”

The statement further revealed that the assassins “disguised as police officers” to perpetrate the crime.

“The armed thugs, who disguised as police officers along with two others, invaded the residence of Hon. Okojie, claimed to be on appointment and proceeded to the seating room.

“Following the intervention of the security personnel attached to the lawmaker, two of the armed thugs fled leaving behind the driver and another who are currently being interrogated by officers from the Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force, Uromi.

“The suspects have so far made a confessional statement stating that they were sent on the mission by People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in Esan North East Local Government Area,” the statement said.

The attempt n the llawmaker’s life comes a day to the start of the Edo State Governorship election.

Earlier, in a press statement released on Friday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, revealed the ban placed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, on all security aides and escorts accompanying political leaders to polling booths and collation centres during the Governorship election in Edoo state.

A 6am-6pm restriction has been placed on vehicular movement on roads, waterways and other transportation routes on d-day.

The move, according to the IGP, is to ensure security and safety at the polls.
