Ogun police arrest three men smuggling 34,000 live cartridges into Nigeria from Togo
Three suspects have arrested by the police in Ogun for allegedly attempting to smuggle a truckload of live cartridges into Nigeria from the Republic of Togo.
Isa Muhammad, a 36-year-old Togolese and two Nigerians – Alabi Fayemi, 25, and Seyi Bamgbose, the 38-year-old driver of the truck – were intercepted on their way to Onitsha in Anambra State.
They were allegedly caught with a total of 34,000 live cartridges.
Ogun Police boss Ahmed Ilyasu said the ammunitions were intercepted by vigilant officers. The suspects allegedly attempted to bribe their way out after they were caught.
Ilyasu added that the suspects were cross-border smugglers who had been on police watch list for six months.
Isa Muhammad reportedly said he was unemployed in Togo and had come to Nigeria to work as a conductor.
The destination for the intercepted ammunition was not revealed.
