Man, locked by brother in suitcase to be smuggled into Spain, suffocates to death

A thirty-four-year-old man has “unwillingly killed” his kid brother while trying to smuggle him into Europe.

Police said the man (names withheld) hid his 27-year-old brother inside a suitcase, put him in the trunk of a car, and took him aboard a ferry heading to Spain from Morocco, on Sunday.

The incident happened in Melilla, a Spanish territory in north Africa. The brothers were headed to Almeria.

During the crossing the Moroccan man noticed that his brother was not breathing. He alerted the ferry staff.

Crew members as well as emergency services workers in the port of Almeria tried in vain to resuscitate the man. He is believed to have suffocated in the suitcase.

Police say they have charged the elder brother with involuntary manslaughter.
