Customs nabs two for “smuggling snakes, spiders, geckos” into Nigeria from Cameroon

The suspects

The Nigeria Customs Service in Calabar, on Wednesday, arrested two men for importing about 140 species of snakes and other animals into the country from Cameroon.

Among the other animals, whose numbers were put at 660, were spiders, geckos, hairy frogs and millipedes.

The unit said the men attempted the illegal smuggling by loading the containers on a Cameroonian vessel tagged “MV Vessel” through the Calabar waterway to the National Inland Waterways Authority in Cross River State.

Customs boss, Mrs Nanbyen Burromvyat said the contraband consignments were Lagos-bound before they were intercepted.
