Soldier killed as gunmen attack ogun communities, residents reportedly abducted
A soldier was killed during an attack by armed gunmen on a private dredging site in Magbon Etido, a community in Mowe, Ogun State.
According to reports, the assailants also allegedly abducted several residents of the nearby Karanla community before encountering resistance from security personnel.
The attackers were said to have targeted an expatriate working at the dredging site, but the individual reportedly escaped unharmed.
Confirming the incident, Oluseyi Babaseyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, described the attack as an isolated criminal act rather than a bandit operation.
Babaseyi stated that one soldier lost his life in the line of duty, while another sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
He added that security operatives, including police and military personnel, responded swiftly after receiving reports of the attack and have launched coordinated operations to track down those responsible.
“Preliminary investigations do not suggest any link between the incident and banditry activities. Investigations and tactical operations are ongoing,” Babaseyi said.
The police command assured residents that the situation has been brought under control, noting that security presence in the affected communities has been strengthened.
Authorities also urged members of the public to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities while security agencies work to apprehend the perpetrators.
