Nigeria’s Striker Osimhen Nominated for CAF 2023 Award

Nigeria and Napoli star Striker Victor Osimhen makes the 30-man nominees for the Player of the Year award at the CAF Awards 2023. Osimhen will have to battle Current Holder Sadio Mane, Liverpool Forward Mohammed Salah, Former Manchester City star Riyadh Mahrez, and Paris Saint Germain (PSG) Defender Achraf Hakimi, among others for the 2023 CAF Men Player of the Year award.

The Super Eagles Striker was a key player for Napoli last season, as the Naples Club won the Italian league title for the First time in 33 years, and also instrumental in helping Napoli to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history last season. Osimhen also won the Golden Boot last season scoring 26 goals and becoming the highest-scoring African in the league. He was also named the best striker in the league. He finished last season with 31 goals in 39 games across all competitions.

Osimhen ended in eighth position at the 2023 Ballon d’Or Award on Monday, October 30, 2023, in Paris, making him the highest-ranked Nigerian player ever. He also became the first Nigerian footballer shortlisted for the award in 24 years since Former Eagles player, Kanu Nwankwo was shortlisted for the award in 1999.

He had a remarkable outing for the Super Eagles during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers scoring 10 goals and helping the Eagles secure a spot for Next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’ivoire.
The Awards Gala is set to be held on December 13, 2023, in Marrakech, Morocco.
