NANS blame death of 11 students on ASUU strike, plead with FG for quick resolution

The National Association of Nigerian Students have called on the Federal Government to look into the ASUU strike as they mourned the death of eleven University of Maiduguri students who were involved in an accident on Tuesday.

The students died while travelling from Maiduguri to Damaturu after being sent home because of the strike.

NANS said in a statement on Friday that it believes the student wouldn’t have been involved in the accident if there was no strike.

“NANS believes that if the strike was not ongoing; the students would have been in school, studying,” the statement by its spokesman, Best Okereafor, read.

“NANS is calling on the Federal Government to save our future and consider the souls of these fallen innocent Nigerian students often told that they are the leaders of tomorrow. Can we lead in grave?

“In as much as we believe in the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, NANS is on this sad note, calling on Federal Government to make students happy by meeting the demands of the striking ASUU and Colleges of Education lecturers without further delay.”

The association also urged ASUU to consider students by shifting grounds in its discussions with the FG.
