Ikorodu: power bike rider crushed to death by BRT bus

A bus belonging to the Bus Rapid Transport system in Lagos has killed an unidentified power bike rider, in Agric area of Ikorodu, Lagos State on Wednesday.

Reports for the scene say the power bike rider swerved in an attempt not to hit a person crossing into the pedestrian lane and ran into the path of the oncoming bus.

 

An eyewitness who spoke to agency reporters said hoodlums who came to the venue pretending to assist stole the phone of the bike rider and as such prevented emergency service operators from identifying the deceased.

The eyewitness said, “While the pedestrian was trying to cross the road, there was a power bike rider who was speeding, the rider swerved to avoid hitting the pedestrian and both of them, and the power bike passenger fell.

“The BRT bus which was also on motion ran into them, the power bike rider died immediately while the passenger was rushed to the nearest hospital. The pedestrian person sustained injuries, and have been taken to the hospital.”

“Immediately the accident happened, some hoodlums came to the scene pretending to render help, but they made away with the mobile phone of the deceased, so he could not be identified.”

Mr Mathew Akinwunmi who is The Assistant Chief Security Officer of  Primero Nigeria Limited operating BRT in the area confirmed the accident and said the power bike rider died immediately while the passenger had been taken to the hospital for treatment.

Akinwunmi said, “It is unfortunate. They rode on an unauthorised lane and suddenly saw a pedestrian crossing, the rider tried to avoid hitting him and rode to the front of our bus. The rider died and the other one was rushed to a hospital.”

CSP Chike Oti, Lagos State Police Public Relation Officer who also confirmed the accident to newsmen and passed a message to Nigerians to report to Owutu Police Station in Ikorudu Lagos if any of their loved ones who owns a bike is missing.

Oti said, “There was an accident and the rider died on the spot. The Commissioner of Police is calling on people whose relations have a power bike and has not been seen since Wednesday to report to Owutu Police Station so that they can have access to the body in the mortuary.”
