Police arrests 19 persons for attempting to burn down police station in Lagos

A chaos that broke out at a police station in Ejigbo, Lagos has led to the arrest of no fewer than 19 individuals who are accused of trying to burn down the Ejigbo Police Station.

Operatives from the Lagos State Police Command picked up the 19 men who were believed to be among a group of commercial motorcyclist that were on a retaliation attack against the police for allegedly using their vehicle to knock down two of their colleagues

Some eyewitnesses said that the crowd of motorcyclist who gathered at the station became violent and started throwing objects at the station and threatened to burn down the building.

It was at this point that the police reportedly decided to mobilize some operatives to repel the attack which left a lot of the motorcyclists with varying degrees of injury.

Speaking on the incident, the police spokesperson in Lagos, CSP Chike Oti said the attack was unfortunate and insisted that no one was knocked down by the police. He said that the motorcylists’ grievances may have been borne out of disapproval on the ban of motorcycle after 10 p.m in the area.

“The motorcyclists intentionally damaged two operational vehicles belonging to the Rapid Response Squad, Ikeja,” Oti said.

“The police did not shoot at any of them; they only fired tear gas canisters to disperse them. The police arrested 19 of them over attempts to burn down the station.”
