How Salawa Abeni rendered her blackmailer powerless
Veteran Waka musician, Salewa Abeni Alidu, wowed social media users on Wednesday afternoon when she took to her Instagram page to share her semi-nude photos.
The 58-year-old Waka legend explained that she took the decision to show that she cannot be bullied by her blackmailer who was threatening to release the photos if she fails to pay him.
She shared screenshots of her WhatsApp conversation with the alleged blackmailer who identified himself as Jason and threatened to release the photos on social media if the singer refuses to pay him money.
Salawa said “these could’ve been pictures of me in the hospital or even with my partner, but is this what has become of us?”
“I am very disappointed that someone somewhere will try to tarnish my image and threaten to destroy my career of over 45 years,” she added.
The veteran singer added “I plead with everybody out there to be very careful as our current situation has made people very desperate. I am almost 60 years old, I have worked very hard and made a name for myself for somebody to believe that they can threaten and trample on my feelings, this is very sad.”
By choosing to call out her alleged blackmailer, the singer took the power off his hand and neutralised whatever leverage he may have before the dirty trickster made good his threat of exposing her nudes on the internet.
She must have learnt that from Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos who took to Medium February last year to reveal that someone was trying to blackmail him with some “naked selfies” he had allegedly exchanged with former TV anchor Lauren Sanchez whom he was having an affair with.
Salawa and Bezos’ approach of calling the bluff of their blackmailers is a good lesson that will strengthen others on how to react to threats of public embarrassment. Unlike the duo who came out strong, some couldn’t live to face the shame and resorted to suicide after their nude photos were leaked on the internet.
