Why you should google yourself frequently

google yourself

By Oyindamola Bamgbola

It won’t be surprising if the first word you associate with googling one’s name is vanity. The truth of the matter is that Google is the CV before your actual CV, especially if you want to be visible to prospective employers, clients and even potential bae(s).

In these times where the Internet is king and information is available at the snap of your fingers, people develop impressions about other people from Google page results without even meeting them, therefore it’s important that you know what is seen when your name is googled.

  • 1. Have you considered that Google doesn’t even know who you are?

For those with really common names, this is often an issue. However, proper search engine optimisation and the inclusion of a middle name may help with improving visibility.

  • 2. Are people seeing information you don’t want them to see?

Each person in this world wants to be known for something. It is entirely your choice (not Google’s) to separate your naughty identity from your serious identity.

Let’s use Bola as an example.

This is Bola.

It should be noted that this dissociation tip is not for everyone. Some people will stand by the words/works of their hands. See Charlie Hebdo.

  • 3. Which information about you comes on the first page?

It takes divine intervention for people to go beyond the third page when google searching anything. Ain’t nobody gat time for that.

This is why it’s important that you pay more attention to optimising the links you want on the first page when you’re googled. Change that nickname on your social media to your full name, add your location, add in a keyword to all your bios across all platforms; do all of these till you get noticed.
