Flood kills 49 in Katsina, hundreds homeless

Flood has wrecked havoc in 10 communities of Jibia Local Government area in Katsina state on Sunday, resulting in the death of 49 persons.

It was gathered that a heavy rainfall accompanied with heavy winds started at about 11pm and lasted till 3am. It caused river channels in the affected villages to overflow their banks, resulting in the loss of lives as it swept away several vehicles, motorcycles and farmlands.

24 corpses that were washed away by water to neighbouring villages of Mada Runfa and Kuntumi in Niger Republic are being repatriated for proper burial.

Some of the communities that are badly affected by the flood are Kwata, Dantudu, Sabuwar, Tukare, Tsohuwar Tukare, Ungwar Mai Kwari.

Many residents were made to flee from their homes and shops when their apartments were invaded by the flood.

A similar incident occurred in Abeokuta last Friday, with many residents losing their lives and properties.
