FG increases police salary, demands better security

The Federal Government has increased the salary of Nigeria Police Force officials over the recommendations presented to the president.

President Buhari approved the Rank Salary Structure Adjustment which is aimed at increasing the salary, allowance and pensions of policemen across the country.

There has been a continuous argument on the negative effects that the poor salaries received by the police has placed on the security body. Many people have even linked their salary as the main cause of their insatiable desire to collect bribe in order to make ends meet.

In the former salary framework, a police constable on grade level 3 earned N43,000 per month while a sergeant on grade level 5-step 10 earned N55,000 per month. With the amount of risk involved in their job, it’s an understatement to say that the police is underpaid.

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris expressed gratitude to the President in a courtesy visit he embarked at Aso Villa with members of the Police Service Commission (PSC) over the increase of their payment package.

Responding to their remarks, President Buhari urged the police to step up to the task of fighting crime and keeping the country safe. He said it wasn’t expedient to always get the military involved in tasks that would have been handled by the police.

“I am pleased to make the increase in salary and allowances in the hope that it will increase the performance index of the police and strengthen Nigeria’s internal security system,” he added.

The IGP assured the President of their preparedness to discharge their duties efficiently in the coming election.

The new salary figures are not yet released to the public and we cannot confirm the difference it has with the former payment structure.
