Fayemi appoints father who shut door against his Lagos returnee son as COVID-19 ambassador

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, on Thursday, said he has appointed Mr. Femi Adeoye, who denied his Lagos returnee son access into his home, as COVID-19 Response Ambassador.

“Father of the young man who sneaked into Ekiti state, as a COVID-19 Response Ambassador in Ekiti State,” the governor announced on Twitter, on Thursday afternoon.

“I am proud of Mr Adeoye as a principled Ekiti man and I salute his courage in helping us keep Ekiti safe.”

As the State’s Ambassador on COVID-19, Fayemi said Adeoye will help propagate the sensitization message as a member of the COVID-19 Task Force @Ekiti_COVID19 in the State.

Adeoye was seen in a video which went viral on the internet on Wednesday telling his son Obafemi that he would not be allowed into his home except he submits himself to the authorities for 14 days isolation to prevent the spread of the virus into the state.

“I can’t stand the risk of COVID-19, despite the fact that he is my son I can’t risk it, because I have instructed him not to travel. I must get a satisfactory clearance from the state before I allow him into my house,” the worried father said in the viral footage.

It was learnt that Obafemi sneaked into Ekiti from Lagos at the weekend despite the COVID-19 lockdown in all the southwest states.

Obafemi said he spent N12,000 on fare to travel from Lagos to Ado-Ekiti. He moved from Lagos to Abeokuta in Ogun State, to Oyo state, before eventually getting to Ekiti. The usual fare from Lagos to Ekiti before the lockdown was between N2500 and N3000.

Adeoye said he took the decision to hand his son over to the COVID-19 task force because he doesn’t want to be part of those that will contribute to the number of COVID-19 cases in Ekiti state like a 29-year-old pregnant community health worker who died from Coronavirus after sneaking into Ekiti from Lagos state where she worked.
