Excessive Speed Caused Fatal Crash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway That Claimed Seven Lives – FRSC
Seven lives were tragically lost and eleven others injured in a fatal accident on Monday night around 9:33 pm along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway near Ogere. The collision involved a Mazda bus with registration number MNY894 and a truck without a number plate, the result of the Mazda bus losing control due to excessive speed and ramming into the truck from behind.
Florence Okpe, spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), disclosed in a statement to journalists on Tuesday that the crash occurred as a consequence of the Mazda bus driver’s excessive speed.
The impact claimed the lives of seven individuals, including five males and two females, while eleven others, comprising nine males and two females, sustained injuries.
“The tragic incident, which took place at 2133 hrs last night, involved a total of 18 individuals, including 15 male adults and 3 female adults,” Okpe confirmed. “Following the collision, the injured were promptly evacuated to PATMAG Hospital Ogere for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were transported to the FOS morgue in Ipara.”
Anthony Uga, the Ogun FRSC Sector Commander, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and reiterated the importance of adhering to speed limits, particularly at night and during adverse weather conditions, to enhance road safety.
“We urge motorists to exercise caution and vigilance while driving, ensuring strict compliance with traffic regulations,” Commander Uga emphasized. He encouraged the public to report incidents of reckless driving promptly via the toll-free emergency hotline, 122.
