Ex-commissioner arrested for allegedly molesting 15-year-old girl in Calabar

Mr. Edet Okon Asim, the former commissioner of information and ex-mayor of Calabar who served as the special adviser to Governor Ben Ayade on Biodiversity has been arrested by the police for serially molesting a 15-year-old girl in Calabar.

The commissioner is said to have started defiling the young girl from when she was 12 years old. During this time, he reportedly impregnated her twice and forced her to abort the pregnancy in each occasion.

It’s been also revealed that the girl’s mother, Mrs. Stella knew about the abuse, but condoned it in order not to offend the commissioner who was her lover as well.

A friend of the family said anonymously that ever since Mrs Stella’s husband, who was a renowned pastor in Calabar died, she had been involved with the man who asked for her daughter’s bosom once the girl reached puberty.

“Since the death of the pastor, Mr. Asim has been ‘helping’ the family and is their benefactor for years now. Immediately the girl started maturing, he took interest and started sleeping with both of them,” the woman said.

The incident that blew the lid in the shameful conduct of Mr Asim was when he got the girl pregnant for the third time and carried out a botched abortion that destroyed the girl’s womb.

Her teacher found out the abuse and shared the issue in a WhatsApp page of Basic Rights Council Initiative, BCRI where Child’s Right Activist, James Ibor took up the case.

“From the examination that has been carried out so far, preliminary results have shown that the girl’s uterus has been partially perforated and she may likely not be able to conceive again,” he said.

The police was involved in the matter and Mr Ashim was arrested  with Mrs Stella. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident and expressed sadness over the matter.

The BCRI said that they’ve been receiving calls from powerful people in the state who are threatening them to drop the case, but the police insists that Mr Asim will be charged to court so that he will answer for his crimes.
