Court to determine if Ganduje can be probed by Kano Assembly December 6

In light of a viral video that showed the Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje receiving large sum of money as an alleged bribe for a project in the state, a Federal High Court in Kano has fixed December 6 to determine whether the State House of Assembly has the power to probe him.

The House had initially moved to probe the governor, but a court injunction was filed against the motion, citing Ganduje’s immunity as a sitting governor as a prohibition to such action.

Defending the rights of the State House of Assembly to investigate the bribery allegation, the Counsel to the legislative arm, Mohammed Waziri argued that the House has the right to investigate anybody no matter their position in order to maintain checks and balances.

However, the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ibrahim Muktar, in defence of the governor insisted that the House has neither the power nor investigative expertise to carry out a criminal investigation against the governor.

“The House has no capacity to conduct criminal investigation and it will be to the detriment of the person being investigated because they lack the capacity to conduct the investigation,” he said.

After deliberations on the issue, Justice A.T. Badamasi declared that judgement will be passed on December 6 to determine whether the House is vested with power to carry out the probe.

Ganduje who is emboldened by the support and goodwill of President Buhari has not publicly addressed the issue since the emergence of the video, neither has he confirmed whether he’s the one or not.
