56 survive as 4 die in ghastly train crash

At least 56 people escaped death after a passenger train derailed in Spain’s northwestern Galicia region on Friday.

Four others were not so fortunate. The Galician regional government initially reported two deaths and raised the death toll four hours later.

The incident occurred at about 9:30am local time in Porrino, about 450 kilometres northwest of Madrid. The train was travelling from Vigo to Porto, in neighbouring Portugal.

The train had three cars. The front one came completely off the track and hit a post next to the line, leaving it leaning to one side. The back two cars were partly off the tracks.

Authorities said emergency services dispatched doctors on helicopters to the scene.

Spanish media said the train was carrying around 60 passengers. At least 47 of the survivors sustained varying degree of injuries.
