“You told me you’d be home soon” – Sister of student crushed to death at Abeokuta mosque mourns

The night of Friday, January 25, 2019 will be one worshipers at the Rahamot Lahill Quareeb mosque will not forget in a hurry for the indelible heartbreak caused by a freakish accident.

Mistura Titilope Hammed and a number of her friends had arrived the mosque to join in the late night worship, known in Islamic parlance as Tahjjud. The students of Ogun State Technical College, Abeokuta, never returned to their school campus alive.

At least seven people, around 10:30pm, were reportedly crushed to death by a car which lost control and rammed into a pole close to the entrance of the mosque.

Mr Olaleye Babajide, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) boss in the Abeokuta Division, said occupants of the car got out alive.

“The car swooped off the road, uprooted an electric pole and thereafter crushed the worshippers standing in front of the Rahamot Lahill Quareeb mosque located beside the road, killing them on the spot,” Babajide said.

“The impact of the crash forced the authorities of the State Traffic officials to axe the car into pieces before the four occupants of the car could be removed from the wreckage,” he added, blaming the accident on drunk-driving and over speeding by the occupants.

Mistura’s sister, Temitope, said the 20-year-old was due for her Industrial Training in March. The deceased had been home a little over a week ago for a wedding ceremony and had promised to reunite with her family again soon.

“You never told me last Saturday would be the last day I would set my eyes on you before you left home for school,” Temitope mourned on her Facebook.

She went on to describe Mistura’s 20 years with the family as “full of fun and joy”.

The occupants of the car, who only escaped with injuries, were reportedly apprehended.
