Wrong perceptions that won’t allow Nigeria have a female president

A Former Minister of Women Affairs, Josephine Anenih, sometime ago assured that Nigeria is going through difficult times because men have been ruling the country.

The ex-minister truly believes that Nigeria needs a female President because male Presidents have failed the nation.

A lawmaker, Hon. Gudaji Muhammed Kazaure, however, recently said women shouldn’t be given equal opportunities as men so as to avoid being “overthrown.”

Below are some of the perceptions that need to change about Nigerian women before we can have a female president:

Place of Nigerian woman should not be relegated to kitchen, bedroom:

The first lady, Aisha Buhari has come out openly to tell the public that he may not support President Buhari if he runs for election come 2019.

Buhari laughed off the comment and said his wife, the first lady, belongs to his kitchen and that he knows not which party she belongs to. “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room.”

His comments to reporters in Germany prompted German Chancellor Angela Merkel, standing at his side, to give him a short glare and then laughed.

Problem of insecurity due to Africa culture should be readdressed:

If we are to have a woman president in Nigeria come 2019, the issue whereby the husband is regarded as head of the house should be readdressed.

Even in a situation where the woman is economically empowered, she still remains subservient to the husband; even if she has all the money in the world, she remains subservient to the husband.

Nigerian women should be given a chance to prove themselves like the other female elected presidents in the world:

Nigerian women of high integrity should be encouraged to join other female presidents in the world.

Nigeria should be ready to believe that there are capable women who can thrive in leading positions in Nigeria.

We have formidable, ‎active and courageous women in the political circle.

War, insurgency, killings and stability:

There is a general belief that a Nigerian woman will not be able to handle the murky political terrain of Nigeria -The killings, insurgency and how to stabilize the nation which is at the brink of disintegration.

There are, however, several formidable women who can emerge as President, if given the chance. Nigerian women can attain the peak of leadership if certain perceptions are readdressed.
