Why WAEC Will Begin CBT For Private Candidates In Nigeria
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Nigeria announced on Monday, November 13, 2023, a shift from the traditional Paper and Pencil Test to a Computer-Based Examination (CBE) format for private candidates sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in 2024.
“The Nigeria National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) wishes to inform the general public that it has concluded plans to migrate its WASSCE for Private Candidates Examination Diets from Paper and Pencil Test to Computer-Based Examination (CBE),” the statement signed by Motorola Adesina, Head of Public Affairs, reads in part.
In the statement released by the body, it disclosed that the First Series will commence in February 2024, forming a step toward the wider goal of adopting a Computer-Based system for all candidates.
The new format will witness the complete transition of Objective Tests to a Computer-Based platform, while the Essay and Test of Practical papers will be hybrid. In the hybrid format, examination questions will be presented on the screen, and candidates will be required to provide answers on the answer booklets given to them.
In terms of logistics, the Computer-Based Examination will take place only in urban and city centers.
While prospective candidates can begin their registration for the examination starting on Monday, December 18, 2023, a Mock Examination is scheduled for February 2024 to allow candidates to familiarise themselves with the new examination platform.
