US Embassy Introduces Two-Visit Rule for Nigerian Visa Applicants
The United States Embassy in Nigeria has introduced an update to the immigrant visa application process, mandating applicants to visit the Consulate General in Lagos twice.
The new procedure, which takes effect from January 1, 2025, aims to streamline the visa process and reduce delays.
According to the Embassy, the first visit will be for an In-Person Document Review. This step allows consular staff to verify applicants’ documentation and ensure their readiness for the visa interview.
“This mandatory review will give you an opportunity to retrieve any missing documents ahead of your visa interview to avoid delays in processing your application,” the Embassy stated.
Unlike previous practices, applicants are not required to schedule an appointment for the document review. Instead, the Consular Section will notify them via email, providing an appointment date approximately two to four weeks before their visa interview.
The second visit will be for the visa interview, which will proceed on the date and time scheduled by the National Visa Center (NVC). The Embassy emphasized the importance of completing the document review before the visa interview.
“If you do not complete the In-Person Document Review before your visa interview, you will be required to reschedule your appointment,” it warned.
This update is expected to affect thousands of Nigerians seeking U.S. immigrant visas, as the Consulate General in Lagos remains the designated processing location for such applications.
