UNILORIN: Outrage as lecturer slaps SUG president

University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) students are furious after their union leader Lukman Sobowale found himself on the receiving end of a hot “doctoral” slap.

Sobowale “eminently” received the slap from engineering lecturer and Ph. D. holder Dr. Ajiboye who carried out the apparent assault because the union leader “disrespected” an “elder”.

Sobowale was, on Monday, assisting nursing students who were scheduled to write an exam at the school’s computer based testing (CBT) center by 9am.

As at 4:20pm, students, 50 in number, were still waiting to go in.

College of Health Sciences faculty, we gathered, is far from the CBT center. The nursing students were on the verge of missing their bus back to the faculty, so they urged Sobowale to help talk to the exam coordinators.

The SUG president who is popularly called “Eminent” reportedly tried to engage exam coordinators politely but was shooed by engineering faculty sub-dean, Ajiboye.

“Ajiboye noticed Sobowale and told him to step back which he did,” a source told Newsroom.

“Again, the lecturer told him to step further away, and he did. He then told him to get out. At that point, Sobowale tried explaining that he was the student union president and that students were on the verge of missing their bus.

“Before he knew it, he got a hot slap.

“Sobowale was shaken but composed himself and challenged the lecturer why he assaulted him. Ajiboye apparently found the SUG president’s conduct insulting.

“Things almost got out of hand as UNILORIN students joined Sobowale to query why the lecturer acted aggressively.

“It was Sobowale himself that calmed his fellow students. That was how a major uproar was averted,” our source said.

Many students are calling for Ajiboye to be sanctioned as his actions may have violated school ethics.

“Students should not engage in violent behavior, same should apply to lecturers who are expected to lead by example,” a student told our correspondent on Tuesday.

“The lecturer has zero tolerance for humanity. What he did is inhumane,” another student said.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Kwara State chapter, condemned the lecturer’s action, and urged students to continue to be law-abiding.

We understand Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdulganiy Ambali, promised to look into the matter.
