“Tinubu has done what’s best” – Rivers Assembly support Fubara’s suspension

The Rivers State House of Assembly has linked the recent declaration of a state of emergency to what it describes as the “despotic and tyrannical” actions of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu announced a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing the ongoing political crisis and instability. As part of the emergency measures, Tinubu also suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the state assembly members. In their place, he appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the state administrator.

The state has been embroiled in a fierce political battle, primarily between Governor Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The power struggle has caused a deep divide within the Rivers legislature, splitting it into factions.

Following the president’s declaration, Martin Amaewhule, the speaker of the assembly faction loyal to Wike, issued a statement on Wednesday welcoming the intervention. He accused the governor of persistent defiance of court rulings and constitutional violations.

“The governor’s failure to uphold his oath of office has plunged the state into chaos,” Amaewhule stated. “His despotic and tyrannical actions, as confirmed by the courts, included unconstitutional obstruction of the Rivers State House of Assembly, preventing it from functioning as an independent arm of government.”

Amaewhule described the president’s decision as a necessary step for national stability, urging residents to remain calm as the newly appointed administrator assumes control.

“We assure our constituents that we will abide by this declaration, even though it is not what we initially sought,” the statement read. “Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the country. Therefore, we call on all residents to support the new administration as it works to stabilize our state.”

The speaker also pledged the assembly’s full cooperation with the newly appointed administrator, promising to provide any necessary legislative support to navigate the state through this critical period.

With Rivers State now under federal administration, all eyes are on Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as he takes charge.
