Don’t tell a soul! Man allegedly bribes 11-year-old rape victim with N2,800
Andong Ashu grew up in an English-speaking community in Cameroon but faced persecution from French-speaking nationals.
That was a major reason he left his family behind and fled to the United Kingdom, seeking asylum.
Not long after he was admitted into the UK, the 45-year-old started to sexually abuse an 11-yea-old girl, and later raped her.
That’s what prosecutors told the Hull Crown Court during a five-day trial that ended on Monday.
Ashu’s and his victim’s paths probably wouldn’t have crossed if the UK had not helped him.
After granting Ashu asylum, the UK also awarded him a grant so he could to attend university, where he gained a science degree.
That was how he ended up working with the National Health Service (NHS) monitoring blood samples at hospitals in Portsmouth before moving to work in Sheffield.
It was not long after Ashu landed in the UK in 2002 that he started abusing the girl who was supposed to be a client.
He reportedly told her speaking out against the vice would mean nothing as no one would believe a child.
As his victim grew older, Ashu attempted bribing her £10 (about N2,800) and £20 (about N5,700) payments, prosecutors told the court.
Ashu’s attempted cover up obviously failed. The girl grew some balls and spoke up.
Ashu was convicted of rape and seven sexual assaults.
As the court told Ashu he faces seven years in jail, he reportedly collapsed and had to be assisted by a custody officer.
He won’t be deported to Cameroon after completing the possible prison sentence because he’s been given citizenship before the sexual offences came to light..
