Explosion Rocks Trans-Niger Pipeline in Rivers State, Sparks Environmental Fears

A powerful explosion late Monday night ruptured a section of the Trans-Niger Pipeline (TNP) in Bodo community, Gokana Local Government Area, sending flames and thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion occurred near the Bodo-Bonny road, a critical infrastructure project currently under construction. Videos circulating online show an intense inferno rapidly consuming sections of the surrounding mangrove forest, raising serious environmental concerns.

The Trans-Niger Pipeline is a key federal oil transport route that channels crude oil to the Bonny export terminal in Rivers State. The damage caused by the explosion could disrupt oil supplies and further impact the volatile energy sector.

When contacted, Rivers State police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko told TheCable that authorities were still assessing the situation and would provide updates after further inquiries.

The incident comes at a time of heightened political unrest in Rivers State. On Monday, lawmakers loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The political standoff has sparked warnings from Ijaw groups, who caution that any attempt to remove Fubara could destabilize the already fragile Niger Delta region.

As investigations into the explosion continue, concerns are mounting over potential environmental devastation and disruptions to Nigeria’s oil exports. Authorities are expected to launch a probe into the cause of the blast and its broader implications.
