Third Mainland Bridge: Negligent road workers endanger lives, cause multiple accidents
A Lagos road user has narrated how he survived a near-fatal car crash on Third Mainland Bridge late Thursday due to road construction workers’ negligence.
According to the victim, identified as Gbemi Famoti, he ran his car into a section of the bridge that is under repair as there was no caution by the contractors to indicate danger.
Reports reveal contractors handling the construction of the bad part of 3rd Mainland Bridge have broken and removed the bitumen used for surfacing the road, but placed no sign to indicate that the road is unfit for drivers to speed on.
Gbemi said he “swerved and hit both sides of the bridge before coming to a stop”. His car was badly damaged but he was unhurt.
Other drivers were however not as lucky – one was badly injured on his leg in the ensuing multiple crash.
Gbemi told NewsroomNG the multiple accidents involving over 10 cars occurred around 11pm and 12am.
“I don’t know what happened to the guy that got hurt after the ambulance took him away,” he told us. “But he was still alive when they responded.”
The contractors in charge of the part of the bridge cannot be immediately confirmed.
