Tanker Explosion Rocks Niger State, Leaving Multiple Dead and Injured

A deadly explosion involving a petrol-laden tanker has rocked Niger State, leaving a devastating toll of lives lost and many others injured. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.

According to reports from the scene, the explosion occurred after the tanker, which was carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), overturned. In the aftermath of the accident, several residents attempted to scoop the spilled fuel when the tanker exploded. The blast caused horrific burns, with many victims burned beyond recognition.

While official numbers have yet to be confirmed, sources suggest that as many as 100 people may have been affected, either killed or injured in the explosion. Local media have reported numerous victims suffering from severe burns, though disturbing images and videos of the incident have not been publicly shared due to their graphic nature.

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago expressed deep shock and sorrow over the tragedy. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor described the incident as “worrisome, heartbreaking, and unfortunate.” He extended his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the souls of the deceased, while also wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.

Governor Bago also took the opportunity to caution the public about the dangers of such reckless actions. “Safety must always be a priority, and individuals should act responsibly in such situations,” he said. The governor has ordered the relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to take immediate action, and urged security forces to ensure safety in the area as investigations continue.
