Russia prepares to host BRICS summit despite Ukraine war
Russia is set to host the BRICS summit despite its ongoing war in Ukraine.
Yury Ushakov, Foreign policy aide to Russian President, Vladimir Putin, revealed this on Thursday.
The Summit to be held in the Russian city of Kazan will attract world leaders from 24 countries.
Ushakov revealed that the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, will be in attendance.
Chinese leader, Xi Jinping is another leader expected to attend the summit.
Despite tensions with Israel, Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, will, also, be in attendance.
Also on the list of expected guests is the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Additionally, leaders of the regional CIS bloc of ex-Soviet countries would also attend.
“The summit in Kazan could turn into the largest-scale foreign policy event that has ever been held in our country,” Ushakov noted.
BRICS stands for the first letters of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, all members who joined in 2009.
The group has since embraced Middle Eastern countries, including Iran.
Ushakov disclosed that the summit will kickstart with informal meetings on October 22, followed by a formal summit on October 23-24.
President Putin will also hold 20 bilateral meetings from October 21 to October 24.
