Pregnant 10-year-old rape victim to have abortion in India
Police in India said on Tuesday that a 10-year-old girl who is pregnant after she was raped by her stepfather will know whether to go ahead with an abortion in the coming days.
Pankaj Nain, the police chief of Rohtak district in northern Haryana state said an application has been filed to seek a court order for the abortion to be carried out.
AFP reports that the child, who was often left at home while her mother went out to work on construction sites, has said she was raped by her stepfather, who has since been arrested.
She got pregnant afterwards.
She is said to have crossed the 20-week legal limit after which pregnancy terminations are only permitted if there is a potential danger to the life of mother or child.
“We have filed an application in the concerned court seeking an order for abortion,” the police chief said.
“Now it is for the courts to decide.”
